Starbucks

I’m singing in the……………..What is that racket?…..Do you know what time it is?   Have some respect for those of us who are sleeping….Come on now!

Bang!!!!The door is closed!

I lived with my grandmother off and on when I was a child, as my mother was seriously ill.  I remember at 5:30 every morning she would get up singing, humming, whistling…..what was going on with this woman?  It may be her house but I am a guest….Come on Now?  She would read her Bible, pray, and then have her cereal…..Yes…..It was G__ and Grape Nuts every morning.   It really didn’t do her any good, as she ws 99 when she passed away with a smile on her face!

I was reminded of this at Starbucks this morning – yes, you guessed it—I am a Starbucks junkie.  Every morning I frequent this particular store which is modern, full of life with an alive staff, well maybe, not all.  One young person behind the counter asked me how I could always be so happy each morning when she was tired and wanted to go back to sleep.

Scripture tells us that This is the day that the Lord hath made.  Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Please don’t make me rejoice at 5:30AM – could we wait until 6:30?  No one really likes me in the morning, as I learned the habits of my grandmother, which could also mean that no one really likes me no matter what time of day it is.

So, dear friends, how are you in the morning?  Are you not fit for man nor beast?  Did you remember to brush your teeth first thing in the morning?  Could you at least put a comb through your hair?  One more tear in that pajama and its out in the trash.  My mother adapted herself to new habits since my father left so early in the morning and returned home late at night six days a week.  She would put on a beautiful robe, fix him his breakfast, put some perfume on and kiss him as he left for business.  I remember asking her why did she do this?  Do you know what her reply was?

I want him to remember me like this so he won’t look for someone else!

As we start our mornings, it is not about us but about what we do in the presence of others.   Psalm 9:1-2…I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.  I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.  Psalm 17:15…As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.  Psalm 24:1…The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those who live in it.

When you feel less than cheerful, remember the words of Psalm 30:11-12…You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may praise you and not be silent.  O Lord my G__, I will give thanks to you forever.  Can’t you just feel the cares of the day leaving you?  You will not need to think that you need to return to your cocoon for safety in your own self but know that you have something to give and you cannot get going fast enough in service to others, be it a smile, a thank you or just how are you.

Body and Spirit are entertwined as I learned from my grandmother.  So just exactly what is your song?  Don’t be afraid.   Sing out and forget the words of Artemus Ward when he said, “I can’t sing.  As a singist I am not a success.  I am saddest when I sing.  So are those who hear me.  They are sadder even than I am.”

So young lady, thank you for the Vinti Non Fat Latte and have a joyful day in service to others.

Now, that really is a discussion for another day.

Blessings.
